Electroplting Tips:

1. Work must be ABSOLUTELY CLEAN before plating. Plating will not adhere to an unclean surface. Work must be smooth and bright to obtain a smooth, bright plate. HAJET Electrocleaner will remove grease. Fingermarks and compound residue from prior buffing operations. HAJET Stripping Salts #120 will remove. In addition, rescale and oxides, whichever method you choose. Be sure not to touch the work after the cleaning operation. Handle the work wire which remains attached to work in all subsequent plating steps.

2. Use a glass tunnel and paper filters to regularly clean your plating solutions.

3. When you are ready to turn your rectifier on, be sure to insert a ceramic or other nonconductive material between the hotplate and the beaker. Direct contact between hotplate and beaker is a common cause of electrical shorts in the rectifier and/or cracked or broken beakers.

Saftey Guidelines:

FOR SAFTETY AND BEST RESULTS, READ LABELS AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS EXACTLY. Plating and stripping solutions usually contain either cyanide or acid which, if used carelessly or improperly, are highly toxic and extremely hazardous to your health.

1. Never get casual with your plating. Always remember that you are working with haxardous materials and use proper saftey precautions, including neoprene rubber gloves and apron, safety glasses and proper ventilation.

2. Make sure ventilation system is rated for hazardous fumes. An open window or central air required directly over or next to the bath (but make sure it's plating fumes are not pulled up by your face to the overhead ventilating system).

3. Never overheat the solutions. This will not only ruin the solution (often permanently) but will also cause the release of fumes with high concentrations of hazerdous chemicals.

4. NEVER MIX ACID SOLUTIONS WITH CYANIDE SOLUTIONS. This will make highly lethal Hydrocyanic gas. Store solutions in properly labeled containers preferably in a locked cabinet. Do not store acids next to cyanides.

5. These chemicals are for professional use only. Do not allow untrained persons to enter the area where these chemicals are stored.

6. Always add acids to water (not water to acids) to prevent splashing or spattering the acid.

CAUTION: Do not allow the positive lead to come in contact with the negative lead when the power is on as this may cause damage to the rectifier.

USING YOUR RECTIFIER FOR ELECTROSTRIPPING:

Attach the red (+) lead wire to a wire holding the workpiece. Attach the black (-) lead to the stainless steel beaker or the anode. Do not let + and - touch each other. Follow the instructions supplied with the particular solution you are using.

USING YOUR RCTIFIER FOR ELECTROCLEANING:

Attach the red (+) lead to the anode. Attach the black (-) lead to the wire holding the workpiece. Do not let the + and - touch each other. Follow the instructions for the electrocleaning solution you are using. The chemical reaction in electrocleaning leads to the formation of gas bubbles which actively scrub away grease and fingermarks.

USING YOUR RECTIFIER FOR ELECTROPLATING:

Attach the red (+) lead to the anode. Attach the black (-) lead to the wire holding the workpiece. Being plated. Do not let the + and - touch each other. Follow the instructions supplied with the particular solution you are using.

OPERATION:

After hooking up the lead wires, turn the ON/OFF switc to the ON position. Turn the power (voltage) control knob until the desired voltage is reached (observe). Refer to the voltage requirements indicated on the plating salts label. Follow the derection for the particular bath you are using. In most cases it does not matter whether you immerse the workpiece in the bath first, and then turn the rectifier on or vice versa.

The voltmeter: Increasing or decreasing the voltage regulates the flow of power to the plating bath. Optimum results are obtained by using as low a voltage as the particular bath permits.

The ammeter: The ammeter indicates the amperage created in the bath. The ammeter gauge only registers when the unit is on and the work is immersedin the tank. During plating, however, the ammerter may register little or no amperage due to very low voltage/high reasistance of the plating bath. Electrostripping use higher voltage and has lass resistance which the ammeter registers accodingly.
